API (Application Programming Interface)explained

A defined way for two pieces of software to talk to each other — like a waiter taking your order to the kitchen and bringing back the food.

In plain English

An API is a contract that lets one system request something from another and get a predictable answer back, without knowing how the other system works inside. When your app shows a live map, sends an OTP, or takes a UPI payment, it's calling someone else's API to do the heavy lifting.

For founders, APIs are why you don't have to build everything from scratch. Payments, messaging, maps, email, AI models — all of it is available as an API you plug into. This dramatically cuts build time and cost, and it's usually smarter to integrate a proven provider than to reinvent it.

The flip side worth knowing: every API you depend on is a third party with its own pricing, uptime, and rate limits. Part of building well is choosing reliable providers and handling the moments when an API is slow or down, so one outside hiccup doesn't take your whole product with it.
